R-055, aka "Ross", was among the best choice of Greys to check out a special kind of whale: a whale that spoke in a completely different frequency from the rest of it's species. The poor whale could not be understood by the other whales and, as a result, has spent decades of lonely migration, wishing that anyone or anything, anywhere, would understand him. Fortunately, Ross was able to understand him somehow, hence why they were chosen to check out the great beast; And not only does Ross communicate with the whale, they even try to bond with it in an attempt to give the both of them a promising future understanding together.
